A Full-Day Wilderness Experience
A Hike from Giriganga Temple to Kupad Hilltop
Located to the southeast of the property, this offbeat hike offers a true taste of Himalayan wilderness, peace, and solitude, far removed from crowded tourist spots.
The experience begins with a 2-hour scenic drive along the Shimla–Rohru road, offering beautiful views and glimpses into the rich culture of the Rohru Valley, a region known for its apple orchards and distinct traditions.
At Kharapathar, you ascend a 6 km forest road from the main highway to reach the sacred Giriganga Temple complex, where ancient shrines of Goddess Ganga and Lord Hanuman sit quietly in the center of a natural spring-fed pond. This spot marks the origin of the Giriganga River, a tributary of the holy Ganges. The surrounding area is dotted with wooden cabins used by shepherds and Gujjar tribes, and the peaceful riverside setting invites quiet exploration.
From here, the hike to Kupad Hilltop begins -a 1.5 to 3 hour trek, depending on your pace and breaks. The trail is unpaved but gradual, winding through dense oak and conifer forests. As you near the summit, the landscape opens up to panoramic views of towering snow peaks including Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, and Gangotri, all located in Uttarakhand.
The Kupad summit is a grassy, dome-shaped alpine pasture, often visited by Himalayan shepherds and Gujjar tribes with their livestock in the summer months. In winter, the Kharapathar region receives heavy snowfall, sometimes up to 5 feet, turning the area into a stunning white wilderness.
On the return, you can stop to view a giant cedar fossil near Kharapathar and enjoy a meal at a local roadside café before heading back to the property.
This hike is perfect for those seeking raw nature, hidden Himalayan beauty, and quiet moments in the wild.
