Sanctuary Trail – Nature Walk & Cycling in Shimla Wildlife Sanctuary
Located to the southwest of the property, the Shimla Wildlife Sanctuary and Water Catchment Area is one of the densest conifer forests in South Asia. It offers a peaceful and scenic escape into nature, ideal for walking, cycling, and seasonal foraging.
🥾 Walking Trails
The forest features three main walking options:
4 km trail – Follows the same route in both directions (out-and-back).
7 km trail – Approximately 80% circular, combining different sections of the forest.
12 km trail – A full round trip loop through the sanctuary.
All trails are of moderate difficulty, with some gentle uphill sections and shaded paths under towering deodar, pine, and oak trees. Wildlife sightings and birdwatching opportunities add to the experience.
🌿 Seasonal Foraging
This forest is also ideal for wild foraging in the right season.
You may spot wild mushrooms (gucchi) and edible fern, locally known as lingdi.
We offer a light, guided foraging experience, introducing guests to local forest food traditions.
Whether you choose to walk or cycle, the Sanctuary Trail is perfect for those seeking nature, quiet, and authentic Himalayan forest experiences.
🚴 CYCLING OPTION
For cycling, guests must first drive 4 km from the property to the Sanctuary Office Gate, where the cycling trail begins.
The gravel road is well-maintained and suitable for a 14 km round trip (7 km one way).
At the far end of the ride, you’ll reach a historic water reservoir, which once served as the first piped water supply source for Shimla.
